Haringey: SEND and Alternative Provision Strategy 2026–2029
In January 2026 Haringey Council consulted on a refreshed SEND and Alternative Provision Strategy for 2026 to 2029, with the consultation closing on 2 February 2026 after being extended at parents' request. The draft set out five priorities:
- Early intervention, so children make progress from their starting points
- High-quality local provision, meeting needs in or close to Haringey wherever possible
- A responsive Local Offer, reviewed regularly
- Authentic co-production with children, young people and families
- Preparation for adulthood, building independence and strengthening support at the move to adult services
More provision close to home usually means shorter school journeys, which is better for children who find travel hard.
Hackney: home to school travel policy
Hackney Council's Cabinet approved a new home to school travel policy on 30 September 2024, after public consultation, taking effect from the autumn term 2024. It reflects the government's statutory guidance for children aged 5 to 16 and guidance on travel support for over-16s. Hackney offers help including a seat on a school bus, minibus or taxi, and personal travel budgets. See our guide to applying in Hackney.
