Who can get help
Camden Council helps children and young people with an education, health and care (EHC) plan, or who are being assessed for one, who meet its home to school travel assistance policy. Camden publishes separate policies for children aged 5 to 16 and for young people aged 16 to 25 in education or training. Each case is looked at individually.
If your child doesn't have an EHC plan, Camden's School Admissions Team can tell you whether they qualify under the general rules, such as distance from school.
How to apply
- Read Camden's home to school travel assistance policy for your child's age group.
- Contact Camden's Special Educational Needs Team to ask for travel assistance. Do this as soon as your child's school place is confirmed.
- Send evidence of your child's needs, such as the EHC plan, medical letters or a letter from the school.
- Wait for the council's decision in writing. It will say what help is offered and why.
What help you might be offered
- A seat on a shared minibus route, with a driver and passenger assistant
- A single-occupancy journey, if your child needs to travel alone
- Support to build independent travel skills, for older children
- Other help set out in Camden's policy, such as a personal travel budget
If you disagree with the decision
You can ask for a review. Councils in England follow a two-stage process: ask for a stage one review in writing, usually within 20 working days, then ask for an independent appeal panel if you're still unhappy. Camden's decision letter will give its exact deadlines.
